Masdar first implements an all-electric bus service in the Middle East

Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, officially launched the region's first fully electric passenger bus in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Transport Department (DoT), the Hafilat Industry LLC bus manufacturer based in Abu Dhabi, and the leading technology company Siemens. The vehicle will serve a six-stop route between the Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station and the flagship sustainable urban community of Abu Dhabi, Masdar City. The Eco-Bus will be integrated into the existing DoT fleet and will be free of charge until the end of March 2019.

The Eco-Bus was designed to withstand the heat and humidity of the UAE climate, which is key to electric vehicles ' performance. It is jointly developed by Masdar, Hafilat Industry LLC of Abu Dhabi and Siemens Middle East and has a range of 150 kilometers per battery charge for 30 passengers. Solar panels are also used to power auxiliary systems of the Eco-Bus.

The DoT of Abu Dhabi was heavily involved in the pilot phase of the Eco-Bus, which conducted extensive tests on the technical performance of the vehicle and on the user experience. Siemens supplied the propulsion technology for the vehicle and Hafilat designed and built the Eco-Bus.

Yousef Baselaib, Masdar 's Executive Director of Sustainable Real Estate, said: "The launch of the Eco-Bus is, in a number of ways, a milestone for the USA. The city of Masdar was an incubator of sustainable mobility technologies, including the iconic Personal Rapid Transport system and the NAVYA AUTONOM shuttle. Now, with our partners, we export solutions beyond the city limits for the benefit of the whole community. "
